As part of the exclusive cooperation between the Chinese Medical Doctors Association and CERT (China Emergency Relief Training), the inauguration ceremony of the "Disaster Medicine Training Centre" was held in Shunyi District, Beijing on 24th, March, 2011.

China is one of the countries most affected by natural disasters in the world. To accelerate the development of Chinese disaster medicine relief activities, CERT (HK) Ltd. founded the first CERT emergency relief training center in Shunyi district in Beijing on April 1st 2010. It aims to strengthening the medical relief techniques of medical and emergency personnel within large scale disaster theatres and to develop a nationwide, standardized professional relief team. The Center introduces state-of-the-art rescue and medical techniques and standards, adopting the international benchmark for light rescue team (USAR),AHA 2010 guidelines, the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) 2008 version and sixth edition of International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) guidelines. Combined with the specifics of Chinese disasters and emergencies, CERT has developed a proprietary disaster medical course. Our intent is that with CERT’s professional disaster medicine training, emergency relief personnel become familiar with international rescue techniques and the latest in scientific thinking; we enable the mastering of professional rescue techniques, self-protection, psychological skills and knowledge, whilst enhancing the public's ability to care for themselves and save the lives of others. When disaster occurs, CERT-trained relief workers provide practical and effective emergency rescue so that victims are saved in the critical "golden hour". Our vision is to save as many lives as possible, providing the greatest possible reduction in the rate of casualty and mortality.

With the strong support from the CMDA, our Center has provided fundamental training for 6,500 relief workers from local emergency rescue teams, local public health bureaus and those from the mining and petroleum industries. The feedback has been excellent. After a 1 year comprehensive assessment of CERT's operational capacity, course standard and training quality, CMDA has agreed to appoint CERT(HK) Limited and its subsidiaries as its exclusive training provider for Doctors and their associates in China.

President Yin Dakui, Vice-president Cai Zhongjun, Vice-director Shi Liying of Foreign Affairs department of CMDA, Vice-director Wang Lixin of Beijing Emergency Center, and Executive Director John Teo & General Manager Wang Li participated in the ceremony.

The "CERT Yunnan Earthquake Medical Relief Mission Seminar" followed the ceremony. The team of 10 rescuers, which included 7 medical personnel, was sent immediately by CERT to support the local rescue activity. The CERT team successfully accomplished rescue tasks at Hefei Village, Heha Village and Lameng Village, having treated more than 300 victims within 5 days. The team also educated the local villagers, volunteers and students in disaster and first-aid skills.

Throughout 2011, CERT in cooperation with its strategic partners, the CMDA, Public Health College of Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Oxford and University of Cambridge, will develop further and more advanced courses, and will raise the general public's awareness of techniques involved in self-rescue and the rescue of others in disaster situations.
